About Myself

I knew at an early age that I had to be an actor.  Fortunate to be born in Manhattan, I spent what seemed like every waking moment absorbed in the New York Arts community: seeking out the best that Broadway and off-Broadway had to offer; catching old black-and-white classics at the city’s many film revival houses; waiting hours for standing-room slots at the opera and ballet.  Performing in school became a vital emotional outlet for me; being onstage was when I felt most alive.

While pursuing my BFA at NYU, my life changed when I was cast in the original Broadway production of Stephen Sondheim’s “Merrily We Roll Along,” directed by Harold Prince.  This jump-started a brief, but busy acting career that included leading roles in regional theater, the off-Broadway chamber musical “Yours, Anne” and a North American tour of “Fiddler on the Roof,” opposite Herschel Bernardi.

I first became interested in casting during an internship at the prestigious New York  theater institution Playwrights Horizons.  Soon after I stopped performing, I was offered a job as assistant to casting director Bonnie Timmermann  on such films as the original “Dirty Dancing,” “Beverly Hills Cop II,” Roman Polanski’s “Frantic” starring Harrison Ford and Hector Babenco’s “Ironweed,” starring Jack Nicholson and Meryl Streep.
I also worked with Ms. Timmermann on two Michael Mann television
series, “Miami Vice” and “Crime Story.”

After a brief stint in a theatrical agency, I became a casting assistant at Grey Advertising, where I learned the ropes of commercial casting.

After three years at Grey, I became a casting director at Donna DeSeta Casting, where I’ve personally cast over 1500 commercials for clients as diverse as:
Target, Burger King, Ford, Sun Trust Bank, Bounty Paper Towels, Disney, Mod’s Hair (for Japan) and NY Lottery.  My working friendship with Mr. Prince led to the DeSeta office casting two projects for him, including the world premiere of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s “Whistle Down the Wind.”

I started teaching commercial workshops a decade or so ago, and have built that up into a thriving second career.  In addition to private classes and coaching in New York,  I often teach seminars for universities and schools throughout the country.
